Abstract

Some Adventist Christians in the Pacific region believe in the related heresies of “perfectionism” and “sinlessness.” This short
paper focuses primarily on 1 John 1:1-10, which deals with the self-deception that one is without sin. John affirms that Jesus is the sinless, incarnate Savior and the basis of our fellowship with God. 1 John 1:1-10 is divided into two. Section I. What was Heard, Seen, and Touched (vs. 14), where John emphasizes that Jesus is the “Word of Life,” manifested to us through incarnation. Therefore, we have fellowship with the Father through Him. Section II. Fellowship with Him and one another (vs. 5-10). Verse 5 focuses on the basis of life with God, and verses 6-10 examine false claims of life with God. This section deals with three heretical views: (a) The idea that we may have fellowship with God but continue to walk in darkness (sin), (b) the view that we have not sinned, and (c) the conviction that we have no sin. John says people who claim to be sinless condemn God as a liar. Acknowledging our sinful natures is a prerequisite to fellowship with God and salvation. Having experienced salvation, we continue to walk in the light and anticipate ultimate redemption at Christ’s return.
