“Enhancing Food Security and Sustainability: The Role of Hydroponic Farming in Supporting Fulton Adventist University Cafeteria Operations”

This study looks at the benefits of hydroponic farming at Fulton Adventist University College (FAUC). It aims to boost food security, sustainability, and education on campus. As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) in the Pacific, Fiji struggles with food production.
This is due to limited arable land, climate change, and a reliance on imported food. FAUC’s cafeteria serves over 400 students but faces issues with inconsistent vegetable supply, rising costs, and low nutritional quality. Using stakeholder interviews, environmental assessments, and cost modelling, this research shows that hydroponic farming can help. It finds strong support from students and staff, highlighting its potential to improve food quality and reduce reliance on external sources. Economic modelling further suggests that a pilot hydroponic system could recover its capital investment within 1–2 years, providing both rapid financial payback and long-term sustainability. It can also serve as a practical learning tool across various academic fields. However, challenges such as startup costs and technical skills require attention. The findings suggest a phased approach that aligns with FAUC’s values of stewardship, resilience, and integrated education. Hydroponic farming offers a promising way to enhance food production and drive sustainability and innovation in the Pacific.
