Abstract

This article evaluates Last Generation Theology (LGT) through the lenses of biblical theology and pastoral concern. It defines LGT and identifies a recurring danger: shifting assurance from Christ’s completed work to human achievement, particularly in forms of LGT that anticipate post–close of-probation perfection, thereby obscuring Christ’s mediatorial ministry. The study restates the gospel order in Scripture: assurance in Christ precedes and empowers obedience. “Perfection” is argued to mean mature, wholehearted loyalty rather than sinless impeccability, which belongs to glorification at Christ’s return. Christian overcoming is grounded in Christ’s true humanity, sharing our weakness without sin, and is realized through the Spirit rather than self-effort. Special attention is given to Pacific Island
Adventism, where communal and honor–shame dynamics, as well as rival independent ministries, can amplify performance-centered religion.
