“A Brief History of the Context and Development of the Growing in Christ Fundamental Belief in the Seventh-day Adventist Church”
Abstract
This article provides a historical overview of the development of the fundamental belief, Growing in Christ (fundamental belief #11) adopted at the General Conference Session in 2005. It examines the need for this belief as originating from the response to mission challenges in the 10/40 window, where fear of evil spirits posed significant challenges. It traces the Adventist Church’s growing awareness of spiritual challenges to its mission in non-Christian contexts, raising the need for a belief that emphasizes Christ’s victory and power over evil. The study highlights the immediate contexts of the development of this belief, including Global Strategy (1986-1990), Global Mission Explosion (1990-1996), Search for Solutions (1996-2002), and the subsequent proposal and adoption of this new statement of belief (2002-2005). By highlighting this development, this article shows the significance of Growing in Christ as a theological affirmation and practical guide for mission and spiritual growth. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of revisiting the historical context to enhance a deeper understanding and appreciation of this belief, particularly for Adventists in Fiji (where similar struggles of fear of spirits exist) worldwide.
