Abstract

This study examines the rise and impact of independent factions within the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in Fiji since the 1970s. Similar to cargo cults, these groups proliferate mainly in Melanesia but not Polynesia and Micronesia, suggesting a regional vulnerability to factionalism. The lack of existing research adds to the challenge of this project but underscores the importance of documenting these faction movements. Notably, the author’s firsthand experience with the early laymen’s movement from the late 1970s to 1993 has been invaluable in documenting these factions in Fiji. The study traces the historical evolution of Adventism and its offshoots, highlighting
key issues like extreme doctrines, misuse of tithes, and charismatic leadership. It offers insights to curb these divisions and suggests areas for future inquiry, aiming to inform SDA leaders and inspire further research on this complex issue.
